The LPD Beat the Heat project was Officer Aaron Lorton's dream when he joined the Lafayette Police Department in October of 2002. He already owned the 1972 Nova. He received LPD approval for the project in 2003 and began building the car.

The LPD Beat the Heat car's first official outing was at the 2004 Lafayette, Indiana Dancing in the Streets Hot Summer Nights car show.

In May of 2007, the North Suburban Sports Car Club asked the LPD Beat the Heat car to be its pace car at its "Blues Brothers" theme race to be held Authobahn Country Club near Joliet, Illinois. Unfortunately, we discovered that the car's frame was badly damaged by rust. The car was too damaged to drive, even to car show events.

Plans to rebuild the car were shelved due to financial considerations. With seed money donated by an anonymous person to build another LPD Beat the Heat car, the race is on again. We located a Nova in Jupiter, Florida that was already set up for drag racing. We picked up the car on Labor Day weekend, 2007 and transported it back to Indiana.

Plans are underway to put in the engine and transmission from the old LPD Beat the Heat car, put on the decals and light bar, and be ready to continue the LPD Beat the Heat project.
